Saturday September 25!
10 am to 5:00 pm.
We are going to a show!
It’s Ann Ranlett’s Art Show & Sale.
Because Ann is an artist.
And she is a biologist too.
So she likes animals and art!
Here is the invitation.
Ann belongs to the Auburn Old Town Gallery.
That’s an Artists’ Co-op Gallery in Auburn.
I know the Davis Food Coop.
But I don’t know if an Artists’ Co-op is like a Food Co-op.
Because we didn’t go there yet.
But Auburn is even higher up the hills than Newcastle.
You can see Ann’s art work at the Auburn Old Town Gallery .
And things made by a lot of other artists too.
But the September 25 Art Show & Sale is just Ann’s work.
And it’s at Ann’s house near Newcastle.
I’ll tell about Newcastle later on.
Because first I want to say what is going to be at the Show!
Here is some of the things that will be there.
There’s original art.
That’s drawings and paintings.
They will be different sizes.
There will be signed reproduction prints.
I’m not sure what that means.
But my Kind Friend knows.
And there will be note cards.
And ear-rings too!
And there will even be some art things that are still being made.
Because Ann will love to tell you about how she makes her art pieces.
And … there’s more things.
There will even be some raffles.
That will be fun.
I think it will.
Because I never went to a raffle before.
And there will even be some refreshments at the show too.
That’s home made Zucchini Bread.
Except no Blackberry Cobbler.
Because Ann and everybody ate all the blackberries until next year!
Ann loves to do drawing and other art things.
And she loves animals too!
So that’s why the drawings and other art things are about animals.
Because when Ann finished college she worked at the Sacramento Zoo.
At first she was called a Keeper’s Aid.
One time my Kind Friend was a Keeper’s Aid at the Zoo too!
And my Kind Friend said the Tigers were bigger than you could ever believe.
And very high up.
Bigger even than a Standard Poodle.
And the Grizzly Bear at the zoo was even higher up than the Tigers.
They are too big for a Bichon Poodle.
I would be very very scared to be a Keeper’s Aide at the Sacramento Zoo.
But then, after that, Ann worked with volunteers and events at the Zoo.
And she did some of her drawings for Zoo projects.
She even did drawings on Ostrich eggs!
I didn’t know you could do that.
But Ann still draws on the ostrich eggs for the Zoo.
You can see some of them here.
Because the Zoo gives gifts to people who help the Zoo.
And what they give them is Ann’s eggs!
Except I don’t know if you can eat them.
And Ann painted pet portraits for friends too.
Here is a link for Ann’s pet portraits.
I think Ann might even make a portrait of me.
Me.
Sammy Bourke.
The unadoptable dog.
I never had a portrait before.
It’s because Ann likes to help animal rescue and support groups.
She does that by donating money from her art sales.
And here are some of the groups she likes to help.
A Chance for Bliss Animal Sanctuary.
And the Placer SPCA.
That’s like the Yolo SPCA .
Ann designed the logos for FieldHaven Feline Rescue and A Chance for Bliss.
A Chance for Bliss rescues animals whose bodies don’t work very well.
Or they are getting very old.
Like Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary in Montana.
I lighted a Hannukah candle for Rolling Dog Ranch last Hannukah.
When Ann goes to visit the rescue groups she takes photos of the animals.
So then she can make art work from the photographs.
And when she sells the art work.
Then Ann donates some of her money to the rescue group.
You can see some of Ann’s photographs on Flickr.
Here is a photograph she took of me.
That’s why Ann is a co-leader of Art for Critters.
Because all those artists sell their animal art work on-line.
And then they donate some of their money to animal charities.
But I never had a pet portrait before.
So I hope I know how to do that.
And I hope it doesn’t make me scared.
Having my portrait painted.
Because I really hope people like my portrait too.
And then Ann’s portrait of me might help get some money for rescue dogs!
Because I am a rescue dog who was going to be euthanasia.
Because they said I was unadoptable.
But now I am not.
I am not any of those things.
I am me.
Samuel.
And I know how to do a lot of things.
And I know it’s because of my Best Friend and my Kind Friend.
Because they rescued me.
And took care of me.
And taught me many many things.
They even taught me how to be my Samuel self!
And I like my Samuel self.
So I would like to help other dogs get rescued too.
Like Ann helps them.
Ann does other animal artwork too.
It’s not just pet portraits.
She does wild animals too.
And she puts her art work on other things.
It’s not just for putting on your wall at your house.
It can be note cards, earrings, signed reproduction prints, mugs and T-shirts.
And some other things too.
So if you might like to buy some things for Hannnukah or Christmas.
You could maybe find them at Ann’s Art Show & Sale.
And here are links to shops where you can find all Ann’s pet art gifts online.
Ann does graphic design and web design too.
Except I just said that.
Because I don’t even know what it means.
But if you know what it is I think you could talk to Ann about it.
Ann also does art work on commission.
And I think that means when somebody asks her to do it.
Like she just finished a Standard Poodle commission!
I am really looking forward to going to Ann’s show.
It’s going to be very fun.
I hope you can come too.
Because I think you will like it a lot.
It’s a nice place to go to for Ann’s Art Show & Sale.
Going to Ann’s is like going to Filati’s.
Because …
When you get on the freeway you don’t go to Davis.
[A Yarn Store is When You Get on the Freeway
That’s why after Filati Yarns you keep going on the freeway.
But after Filati’s you can get off the freeway and drive into the foothills.
Because that’s where Ann lives.
It’s near to Newcastle.
But it’s not the Newcastle that has coals in it.
Because that one is in England.
Ann’s Newcastle is the Newcastle in California.
It’s in between Sacramento and Auburn.
Auburn is where the Auburn Old Town Gallery is.
And it’s a pretty road to drive along.
Where Ann lives is very nice.
With lots of wild animals and birds.
When we visited Ann we saw …
A Black Phoebe.
Goldfinches.
A woodpecker.
Scrub Jays.
Some Black Butterflies we forgot the name of.
We think we saw a Red Shouldered Hawk too.
When you get close to Ann’s house.
There will be signs with directions to the Art Show & Sale.
And you might see some of these on the way there!
Wild Turkeys
Belted Kingfishers
White-breasted Nuthatchs
Red-tailed Hawks
Barn Owls
Great-horned Owls
Black-headed Grosbeaks
Western Tanagers
Western Bluebirds
Western Kingbirds
Ash-throated Flycatchers
California Towhees
Spotted Towhees
Quail.
Red-shafted Flickers
Acorn Woodpeckers
Oak Titmice
House Wrens
Bewick’s Wrens
Wrentits
Mergansers.
And Warblers.
Lots of different hummingbirds.
Even Black Chinned Hummingbirds.
And Rufous Hummingbirds too.
Or even you might see some of these animals.
Deer
Coyotes
Bobcats.
My Best Friend has seen some coyotes.
And he’s seen a dead bobcat .
But I haven’t.
I wish I could see a Bobcat when I go there!
Because I would like to chase it.
And at Ann’s house there’s two ponds.
There’s even a small lake.
And a pond.
I hope my Best Friend doesn’t jump in the water again.
Like he jumped into Putah Creek to chase the baby ducks last week!
And in Ann’s ponds there’s …
Beaver
Muskrat
Otters.
Western Pond Turtles
Green Sunfish
Mosquito Fish
Bullfrogs and
Tree Frogs.
And everywhere there is lots of butterflies.
But my Border Collie Friend lives at Ann’s house too.
I don’t know if she jumps in the water.
But she likes to play ball like we do.
Except I don’t know what she would do if I stole her ball.
Like I steal my Best Friend’s ball.
And Bess lives there too.
Because Bess is a horse.
So she is very big.
Like our horse friends at the UC Davis arboretum.
I wish I could live at Ann’s house.
Like my Border Collie Friend does.
Only If my Best Friend and Kind Friend could live there too of course.
So if you might like to buy some things for Hannnukah or Christmas.
Or the other holidays too.
You could maybe find them at Ann Ranlett’s Art Show & Sale.
I am really looking forward to going there.
So I can have some Zucchini Bread.
And win some raffles.
It’s going to be very fun.
I hope you can come too.
Because I think you will like it a lot.
And if you come you will see me and my Friends.
So please come and say Hello to us.
And you can even have some Zucchini Bread too.
And win your own raffles too!

Just a note in case anyone sees the link to A Chance for Bliss in the post and clicks on it. A Chance for Bliss no longer exists and I do not support the organization that they have become (WindSong). Too long a story to go into, but I just want people to know.

My dearest Sammy, thank you so much for writing about me, my art, my animal friends and my show. I’m looking forward to seeing you, your Best Friend and your Kind Friend again. I’m very glad you sent me an e-mail a while ago so we can all be friends!
BTW, Magpie’s “Tall Friend” (that’s what we call Sandy), will be at the show too! She’s helping as my hostess for the day. And I thought you’d also like to know that, Sheila, the dog she had with her has gone back to her owner. He missed her a lot and moved back near Sandy and has Sheila with him again.

Hi Ann!
I am very glad we are friends too. Because you live in a very nice place. And Magpie really likes to play ball. I am glad Tall Friend will be at your Show. She is very nice. I am sad that Sheila won’t be there. Because I like Sheila a lot. But I hope Sheila can stay with her owner and be happy.

Hi Sammy – I wish I could see the show. My human really likes Ms Ranlett and her art and her fellow dogs. She told me they were Border Collies, so that’s pretty cool since I don’t know that many humans who have BCs. Well, we are in Texas, so we won’t be able to make it, except in our hearts. I hope you post pictures when it’s over. We hope it goes well!!!
Your friend,
Sam the Border Collie
